Seems a natural sub-topic here and with summer approaching I was wondering if there were any other board game enthusiasts here?
Latest game that the family (Ours and the extended) has latched onto is Splendor. Played it twice so far and really enjoyed it. Mechanics seem simple but the game play is deceptively complex.
Favorites that we return to are: Thurn and Taxis, Ticket to Ride, Isle of Skye and Blokus to name some...I think within the family there might be...150-200 board games?
Used to play Chess quite a bit with my father and uncle but no one seems to want to play that anymore. My brother-in-law and I purposed to learn Go but have yet to. I suspect we're going to learn separately and then gather to play each other once we've been given a number of go-arounds at it with better players.
Speaking of which, we (My brother-in-law and I) have Photosynthesis on the back-burner. I think this summer vacation we'll have a go. Anyone here played it? That and I've promised my wife for months now that I'd learn Machi Koru...Maybe at the beach.

Board and cards games have been a hobby of mine since I can remember. Way back when I was around 7, I would spend the summer playing board games with friends like the ninja turtles, mousetrap, operation, monopoly and Sorry. Then some puzzles and swimming. Those were the good years. Fast foward to about 20 years later, I still play cards and board games with the family. I own have ticket to ride European, North America, Catan and few more games. I even have it on my iPad and iPhone. Catan is by far my favourite board game other then monopoly. I've even been to a tourney a while back and finish 2nd. You just gotta take the time to have fun with friends and family . Hopefully it gives a little insight of my past and where the love of board games comes from.

Settlers of Catan has been hit and miss (for whatever reason) at our house. One game in particular turns our game table into an octagon: Forbidden Desert. The timing mechanism, the amount of sand that adds up, decisions to employ one expert or another...It's hilarious in one way but by the end of the game, we're barely on speaking terms, lol. That's funny you mentioned Monopoly, Frank. My buddies and I (Elementary School) played it, and the games would last a while. We'd continue games from one weekend to the next or one day to the next if we lived closer to one another (North York, ON). Same with D&D. A game I was obsessed with being a Paladin in...Tricky rolling that 17 for charisma though. Came back from the in-laws late last night and noticed Thebes in the game cabinet...It's another really great game with multiple elements that provide gameplay that's interesting throughout the game. You mentioned puzzles...My friend just picked up a couple of puzzles (500 pcs I think) at Dollarama, Marvel themed, I think with old covers? I remember another buddy of mine used to glue his completed puzzles and hang them on his wall.

Ome game everyone llay nice and the other it's a big fight. I guess I'm too competitive. I always play the game with an angle and try putting poeple against one another to get the advantage. Lol !! We all have our strategies and at one point or near the end we get into fights (mostly yelling). It's a fun game but one that most of us take too much to heart. I stop playing it at my in laws once I saw my father in law did everything in his power to make me lose. I remember one time I was about to win and he start offering deals to others since he prefer his daughter to win which is kind of normal but super unfair. So from that point on I decided to never play that game with them. I instead decided to play other games that won't affect us that way. Ticket to ride is quite a mellow game, we do not take it as personal as Cantan. All in all it look like we have the same feedback about Catan and the side affect.

Those were the good times but my grandma got sick and we haven't played many cards games since. Now that my grandma died we won't play much except a partner game called whist. I remember last year when she was a live and it was my grandfather 80 birthday we played whist until 5 am at my grandparents house. The players were me,my grandpa, my brother and my dad. I also remember that my grandma would wake up. say your still playing, laugh and then return to bed. I miss her soo much, it hurt soo much that i won't see her in this life. Good memories, those are the one I will always have near my heart, yes I have one lol!! .

There was a card game an Uncle from Scotland taught me that he called, Chinese Patience. It was adversarial Solitaire for all intents and purposes but it was great fun.
Speaking of family dust-ups, lol...There was an incident where we were playing a game of cards (I think it was Rummy) where my Father wrongly accused my Uncle of something, and I don't know if what transpired next was something relegated to families from Glasgow or just ours, but my Uncle picked up a teaspoon from out of his coffee cup, stood up as my Father remained seated, raised the spoon and got up on his tippy-toes, then timed his insult with the action of bouncing the spoon off the top of my Father's head, shouting, "You wee bastard!" after which he walked out of the room as calm as if he was getting up to get another cup of coffee.
We were all obviously a little bit shocked, but my Father remained completely calm - you wouldn't have known he'd just been thumped, lol - grabbed his coffee and sipped it and said, "Ach, he's alright. It's nothing." as he felt the top of his head. Then says to me, "But see? See that? See what he's like?...Fuck's sake."
My Uncle walks back in a few minutes later, "Right...I think it's wee Ian to go next."
LMAO.

This topic is getting quite interesting whit all these great memories and how it define our personality, our character and even our career path. It's really true how one action or reaction can mold each of us. Love the story Mr. Djur, you have a way with words that can awake one sole. Thx!!
