and in the nhl, since last year, all 14 teams have a shot at first overall, so here it would be all 8.... cool, couldn't recall if that rule had gone through at the NHL level. but I can't vote until I get some clarity on what your plans are. If it is to change (update, inform, enlighten, tell us) the rules for this entry draft a few months before it occurs, I have to vote no. if it is to use a lottery draft in future entry drafts, I vote yes. imo a discussion on that seems kind of important.

Voting no just because don't think we should be making a change for this year when the standings have already been set. Obviously Surrey has everything to lose here, Canners is a bit in the middle as he does have a good chance of getting #1, but the rest of the top 8 would have a big incentive to get a chance at #1.
I was actually under the assumption that it was based on reverse order, because that was what it was explicitly stated for the Waiver Draft order - so that led me to believe it applied for Entry also.
But I'm fine with changing it for next season since everybody would know in advance. And just to be clear the lottery order applies for 8 picks only in 1st round only (2nd through 5th remain based on reverse standings)?
How about the rest of the picks 9 to 24, did we want to base those on the NHL format also (ie. cup winner picks 30th, runner-up 29th, semi-finalists next, etc.. (season standings for those eliminated in same round)? (next year of course, unless no one has objections to apply for this year since the results are still in doubt) And this latter order applies for all rounds?

imo, reverse regular season only. the play-offs really shouldn't have a bearing on the NHL entry draft either, but that isn't important here.
our play-offs are much more impossible to be in our control than the NHL's.

Voted no but I get frustrated when people keep bringing up rule changes. What rules were in writing that have been changed this season? I am seeing rules from a first year league that weren't clarified and the commish attempting to reach a consensus to determine how things should be handled. No one is trying to change rules midstream to benefit teams or penalize others.
The rules say nothing about if it will be lottery a la NHL or just reverse of standings so I don't know how either option could have been assumed or how it can be viewed as changing rules when there was no rule in place. Dave will have no problem admitting that the rules on day one were vague and needed clarification on certain subjects. They were adapted from a 30 team league and some aspects such as the entry draft we are discussing now just weren't addressed.

it's always based on regular season standings only....and yes, it is only for round 1.

I like the idea but I understand also that some GMs traded for 1st round picks thinking about reverse order. Agree with most things already written here.... So - NO for this season, YES - sometimes in future when nobody will have advantage or disadvantage because of traded draft picks...

Blues GM is correct here. Trades were made with assumption of draft postion. And now we are to introduce a lottery? Again, its a great idea but too soon. 2015 should work out fine.

Just a note that I actually think this league is run quite well and have full trust in our leadership to make fair decisions - a lot better than other leagues I've been part of thus far. So Matt please don't take any offence to our comments and/or questioning. Looking back, do realize we tend to complain a bit too much (myself included) and do take for granted a good thing we have here, so keep up the good work.

I voted for a weighted lottery (even if it must be delayed until 2015). My fear is that if there is no weighted lottery in place for 2015, we'll have a boatload of teams tanking for McDavid.
So a weighted lottery for non-playoff teams, where teams can't fall more than one spot, seems like a perfect outcome to me.
Cheers, Dave (Sabres)

I hope that my voicing my concerns is not viewed as complaining. I also am not suggesting that anyone is "trying to pull a fast one" or do anything underhanded. My only reason for speaking up is to voice my point of view, that I don't think a lottery is appropriate for this season, I am all for it next season as it looks like no 1st round draft picks have been traded there yet. having been on the admin side of building a league, I know what a pain in the ass it can be to make sure all the i's are dotted and t's crossed. I think you all are doing an excellent job, it's why I joined this league in the first place.

No worries Kelowna and Blues I enjoy that both of you and others voice your opinions and I know you have the league's best interest in mind.
Not speaking towards anyone specifically, but it comes across sometimes like people think we are changing the rules all the time and I don't understand where that sentiment comes from. Anytime something in the league has needed tweaking it has been done through discussion and to try and solve potential problems. It's good to hear people seem satisfied with how things have been handled so far.

not at all, I want your opinions, but I also want votes.... the most a team can move down is one spot, so it's not THAT big a deal. Keep it interesting/climactic. I vote Yes.
